New school uniforms…

Thanks to Georgina Varney and her friends, the most needy children at Hosanna School were finally able to wear the proper school uniform.

Georgina’s team raised £1,000 to have the clothing specially made and distributed this September. As you can see, the children were delighted to receive their new uniforms!

Maggie’s visit to Hosanna 2016

Greetings from Hosanna School – A letter from Maggie

P1020006 (1)

On my recent visit to Hosanna Primary School in the Kisenyi district of Kampala I was again reminded of the incredible impact the school has on its pupils and their families. Kisenyi is not a good place to live. It is dirty, noisy, smelly and dangerous for children, with open drains crisscrossing the ground. The dwellings on the whole are just one room with no sanitation or electricity. Hosanna School provides a safe space within its boundaries with free access to toilets and clean water, as well as a good standard of basic education and a caring environment The school fees are deliberately kept low and pupils are not turned away if their families are unable to pay. Thus funding from the Support Group charity plays a vital part in the viability of the school, enabling it to function efficiently. Thanks to your continuing support the school is able to provide free daily porridge for each of its 900 pupils, supplement the teachers’ salaries, provide stationery and teaching materials, pay for exam fees and keep the buildings maintained. Those paying fees for ex Hosanna pupils at Secondary School are enabling these young people to continue their education and improve their chances of gaining  meaningful employment, something not normally possible for children from Kisenyi. As my visit coincided with the end of Term the Trustees agreed to provide funding for each class to have an end of term party, a real treat for staff and pupils alike!

The staff, parents and pupils have asked me to tell you how much they appreciate your interest and support for them and for the work of the school. On behalf of the Trustees I too would like to add my thanks to all our supporters. With regard to the ongoing dispute about the ownership of the land, the final 2 days in court are scheduled for 24th and 25th January. The Lawyer representing the school is very confident that the judgment will go in their favour. So we look forward to this issue being satisfactorily resolved in 2017 and for a bright future for all at Hosanna Primary School

Sponsorship – Changing Lives at Hosanna

Change lives by sponsoring a student at Hosanna School

Hosanna School, situated in the shanty town of Kisenyi, Kampala, is a very special place.  It offers a good standard of basic primary education to over 900 children from this deprived area. It also provides a safe haven, clean water and free toilets. The school fees are kept low to enable families access to education. Children are not sent away if the fees are not paid in full. The dedicated staff receive lower than average salaries.

The Hosanna Primary School Support Group is proud to have played a part in this work by providing funding since 2003.

Last year 230 children at the school had their fees paid by supporters in the UK – at a cost of £42 per year

Sponsoring Secondary Education

Investing in the future of students through secondary education

Six years ago the Head Teacher of Hosanna School asked  if we would consider continuing to fund a few pupils, who did well in their Primary Leaving Exams, at Secondary School.

It was agreed to ask the sponsors who responded positively.

The students show great commitment as they live in cramped accommodation with no power and little privacy. They also need to find paid work in the holidays to help supplement the family income.

Four of the five students who started at Secondary School in 2010 completed their studies last year. Something they could not have hoped to do without the provision of school fees, which at £50 per term are way beyond the means of Kisenyi families.

And There’s More!

With continuing support from their sponsors, Francis and George are training to be mechanics, James is training to be a mobile phone technician and Tadeo is enrolling in a Teacher Training Course.

.Attending Hosanna School, and being able to continue with their education and training, has opened up life changing opportunities for these young men.  In a letter to his sponsors George wrote: ‘I would like to thank you for turning my life from darkness to lightness’.

New Horizons Secondary Education

There are 33 ex Hosanna School pupils now attending local Secondary Schools thanks to Supporters in the UK.

The Support Group Trustees see this as an exciting extension of the work of the charity and are keen to develop the support for Hosanna pupils as they leave the school.

Could you and your family or friends take part in this life enhancing project and cover the cost of Secondary education for pupils as they leave Hosanna School?

The Secondary Schools are selected by the Head of Hosanna School and the students meet her at the end of each term to report on their progress. Their school reports are sent to their sponsors in the UK

At present Secondary School fees are £150 a year – £50 per term  £12.50 a month.

Thank you if you are already supporting a child at Hosanna Primary School or at a secondary school, but maybe you know of someone who might be interested in helping with this new challenge.
